The Beachy Psalter: Psalm 6
To the Deacon. A Psalm of the HBB.
There is a folly under the sun,
And an error before mine eyes,
For behold, there are those which speak,
Yet understand not,
And they which act,
but know not why.
For they look upon the things which they have allowed,
And behold the things which they have permitted,
Such things as VCR’s or DVD’s.
And they say within themselves,
Verily, we shall remove these things from our home,
for they sap our time,
And do fill the minds of our children with mush. Selah.
And furthermore, we have begun to watch things upon them,
and to view things with our eyes,
that please not God,
but which are rather ungodly. Selah.
Behold, they say, we shall remove them from before our eyes,
And shalt rid them from our home.
Which thing is good.
Yet, say they, shall we keep our preaching videos,
And educational videos, as well as our old family videos. Selah.
And realize not, nor comprehend
that it was those self-same things
which originally opened the door.
For behold, they bought the VCR and DVD player
That they might watch preaching videos
and might behold family movies. Selah.
Think they that the path shall surely be different the second time?
Think they not that other videos shall creep in again,
As they did aforetime?
Nay, for they are deceived, and comprehend not at all,
For otherwise they should make a clean break. Selah.
Behold, be not like unto them,
For if thou art ensnared by some habit,
And enslaved by some desire,
Remove it from thee and lock the door,
Cast it away, remove it from thee.
That thou mayest be free,
And not brought again under the same old bondage,
That thou mayest rejoice,
And not have grief. Amen.

Thus, for this reason and to this end,
did the Beachy’s of the earth fear
and made the earth like the garden without the tree
like the men of Babel did they babel about temptation
And low and behold
when they were finished with their counsel meeting
and when they had carried out their plans
they looked about on the earth they saw
nothing
for on the first day they had annihilated the living creatures
for they had caused them to stumble into gluttony.
They had thought some creatures could be saved from the purging
but low, they realized once there were no cows for hamburger the errant youth were tempted to hamburgerize even a rat.
…on the second day they annihilated first the coco plants
for they had heard some of their brothers in Mexico had stumbled and fallen and were incarcerated for practices most shocking in relation to it.
They purged the earth of the tobacco plant the marijuana and other such types and then heard a rumor about children who tried to smoke alfalfa.
and on the final day, the seventh day there was nothing, not even light for light causes one to see all that which could be the lust of the eye and it was not elouped by a 3/4 majority vote at the counsel meeting.
And behold all the Beachys looked around
and low they said it was good.

please, understand. this is not to say that no standards or guides to the christian life are needed. Far from it! It is when we as a community make the process of not allowing things into its own personal god, that we then come to bow down to our own graven images, and becoming gods ourselves, replacing God in his creative work.
Wisdom which comes out of the Spirit of Christ is our only recourse.

The MD wrote,
The problem begins in ourselves, for we become frightened at the thought of confrontation.
On the giving end we allow ourselves to struggle with thoughts like:
What will he think of me, what if he/she takes it wrong, I don’t want to discourage them, etc.
And on the receiving end:
What right does he/she have to tell me what to do when they have all these problems, I don’t want to change, I like the way I am, & on & on & on.
Yet, if we come to grips that it’s our obligation to confront, out of love for God and each other, and not be self motivated, but only have others interest (as in eternal interest) in mind. That lays the ground work for an open discussion on issues that we’re dealing with, wether they be standards or simply principles lifted up in the Bible.
